Reflection
Experience
This course introduced me to a wealth of new things and knowledge. Through further reading, I delved deeper into relevant information. Designing a font was the most challenging aspect, as it demanded the creation of something from nothing, putting my imagination to the test. The process of fine-tuning the font after its creation made me consider giving up at times. I'd find that no matter how I looked at it, something seemed off. Once I was satisfied with a particular character, integrating it with others posed new challenges such as excessive kerning, incorrect angles, asymmetry, or extreme slants. This journey taught me that in design, perfection is an elusive concept; the key is to find satisfaction in my work. If I'm content, then it's good enough.
Certainly, learning typography and being able to create fonts is a valuable skill. It allows me to incorporate fonts I like into various aspects of life or experiment with such knowledge in design projects. However, it's important to recognize that the path of design is one without a definitive destination of perfection. The realization that imperfections are inevitable in design has been enlightening, emphasizing the importance of personal satisfaction in the creative process.
Observation
Time has passed by incredibly fast, and the first semester has come to an end, including the conclusion of the typography course. Before starting any task, I always have to search the internet for references and materials. During this process, I encountered a plethora of unique designs—some filled with artistic flair, others completely unfamiliar. These discoveries often bring me a wealth of inspiration.
Typography covers a vast spectrum, ranging from a single letter to a word, an entire article, and extends further to encompass web pages, books, and more. Within this domain lies an abundance of rules and principles to adhere to. It's fascinating how typography, in its varied forms, demands adherence to numerous rules, from the minutiae of a single character to the layout of an entire webpage.
At the outset of learning typography, delving into its history provided me with a deeper and more comprehensive understanding. It not only enriched my knowledge but also broadened my perspective significantly. Exploring the historical context not only enhanced my learning but also allowed me to appreciate the evolution and diversity of typography throughout time.
Findings
Typography is almost omnipresent in typesetting, whether in articles or fonts, saturating our daily lives. The influence of typography is widespread, and visible in nearly everything we see, prompting us to enhance our understanding by keen observation. It poses significant challenges in typesetting, demanding creativity, keen observation, and patience. Adjusting a single point to achieve the ideal state in design requires meticulous adjustments. However, as long as we are not daunted by difficulties, they ignite our spirit of challenge and our desire for exploration, encouraging us to strive for greater perfection. Maintaining such a mindset contributes to our progress.
I hope that one day I'll be able to incorporate the fonts I create into my personal devices, allowing them to accompany me. Of course, this desire is contingent upon their ability to meet my satisfaction.
