Week 7

Fig7.1 Color Corrention PPT

Colour Correction:
Adjusts individual clips to match color temperature and maintain a consistent technical standard. Ensures whites appear white, blacks appear black, and all colors are balanced. Use the Lumetri scope tools: RGB Parade, Waveform, Vectorscope. Set luminosity values for each shot. Focus on highlights, midtones, and shadows. Adjust basic corrections: exposure, highlights, shadows. Compare before and after using Display Mode. Use RGB model for color adjustments. Begin color correction with the eyedropper tool. Balance colors with temperature and tint adjustments. Reference the first corrected clip for subsequent clips.

Colour Grading:
Enhances the corrected image for aesthetic and communicative purposes. Increase contrast and saturation, apply a new color tint. Use an adjustment layer and S curve for contrast. Adjust temperature, tint, and saturation for new looks (e.g., bluish, greenish, brownish). Apply complementary colors like teal and orange for contrast. Use color wheels to assign specific colors to shadows, highlights, and midtones. Combine various color grading techniques for desired effects (e.g., desaturation, high contrast).

Week 9

Fig9.1 Audio Editing

Frequency Range:

  • Human hearing ranges from 20Hz to 20,000Hz.
  • The frequency range is divided into 7 subsets to help define different ranges.

Dynamic Range:

  • Measured in Decibels (dB).
  • Human hearing threshold is 0dB SPL (sound pressure level) and pain threshold is 130dB SPL.

Mono vs. Stereo:

  • Mono sound uses a single audio channel.
  • Stereo sound uses two audio channels.

Setting Up Audition:

  • Use Audio 2_40 for practice.
  • Create and save a multitrack session.
  • Apply effects using the Effect Rack, such as the Parametric Equalizer.

Sound Effects:

  • Phone Call Sound Effects: Lower bass and treble, raise midrange between 500Hz to 2kHz.
  • Muffled Sound Effects: Bass remains, treble is lowered, and midrange is raised to the top.
  • Reverb Sound Effects: Adjust decay time, pre-delay time, perception, dry, and wet settings to create spatial sound effects.

Sound Shaping Exercise:

  • Record a 5-second voice clip and apply different sound effects: phone call, inside a closet, bathroom, underground cave, alien/orc voice.

Week 7: Color Correction and Color Grading
Fig7.1 Color Panel in Premiere Pro
We learned how to use the color panel in Premiere Pro, specifically using the Lumetri Scopes for color correction in films.

Fig7.2 Color Correction

Next, we studied basic correction, which includes exposure, highlights, and shadows. We also learned to use the comparison view in display mode to observe before-and-after changes. After that, we learned how to use the eyedropper tool to adjust temperature and tint. Finally, we used the color wheel for advanced color correction, such as adjusting the colors to achieve a teal and orange look.

Fig7.3 Color Correction Pretice

Finally, we had practice time, where we color-corrected the provided video using an adjustment layer to achieve bluish, greenish, and brownish tones.

Fig7.4 Requirement of color correction

In addition, this color correction must be applied to the video shooting and editing for Task 2a, creating a trailer under one minute. The footage needs to be color-corrected using the six mentioned styles: teal & orange, bluish, greenish, brownish, desaturation, and black & white high contrast.

Video Editing
Fig7.5 Audio Choosing

I chose the music for the trailer, aiming for a tight, fast-paced rhythm. I selected a piece with a horror theme and marked the beat points using the marker tool to ensure the transitions align perfectly with the music.

Fig7.6 Video Editing

In this part, I first extracted the desired clips to piece together and convey the story, controlling the duration to match the music's beat points.

Next, I searched for sound effects to enhance the video, such as impact sounds. For the fight scenes, which were in slow motion, I had to speed them up to ensure they looked realistic.

To enhance the trailer's feel, I edited it into short, concise segments and added text. Given the horror theme, I included red strokes around the text. Additionally, for scenes with dialogue, I added subtitles to ensure viewers could understand the conversations clearly.

Fig7.8 Color Correction

To meet Martin's requirements of incorporating six different color corrections into the trailer, I color-graded individual clips accordingly.

Additionally, I made final adjustments to the video, such as adding transition effects, music fade-ins and fade-outs, noise reduction for the sound effects, and enhancing the smoothness and flow between clips.

Task 2b: Tiktok Video Shooting

This task involves shooting a TikTok video, focusing on showcasing creativity. The requirements are to film in vertical format and keep the duration around one minute. For editing, we will use CapCut.

Tiktok/ Insta proposal PPT

Mr. Martin asked us to incorporate our ideas from Task 2, find a film theme that interests us, and creatively integrate our concepts into the film to convey what we want to express.

Week 7 and Week 8:

Proposal Version 2

After discussing my TikTok video concept and storyboard with Mr. Martin, I've decided to change the original content from a solo transition video to a dual-person video.

The content and specific ideas are detailed in the proposal. Briefly, the story is about two similar people in the same time and space who have never met, but due to fate and an incident involving headphones, their paths intersect. Amidst regret and missed opportunities, they finally meet.

The ending is open-ended, allowing viewers to use their imagination. I've also incorporated Martin's idea of the illusion of meeting to enrich their sense of regret.

Fig8.1 Mindmap of Tiktok Video

I've outlined my ideas and selected the scenes. To showcase similar life paths, I chose settings such as a room, a school, a park, and an arcade. The school is the primary setting, featuring scenes of encounters and missed connections.

Fig8.2 Shooting
To facilitate editing, I used CapCut and 剪映 on my computer. Since some features require payment or are exclusive to the pro version, I alternated between the two apps to achieve the best results. I organized the filmed clips into folders.

Fig8.3 Editing using capcut
I used the web version of CapCut for editing since many features and effects are free. I started there, then moved to 剪映 to add transition effects and further edit the video.

Fig8.4 Upscale

Additionally, for a bus transition shot that required zooming in, which reduced video quality, I used a quality enhancement tool to ensure clarity.

Fig8.5 Editing in 剪映

Initially, I exported the edited video from CapCut and imported it into Jianying. I then further split the clips to add transition effects. Additionally, to ease the overly tight rhythm, I divided the video into four segments to create a simultaneous playback freeze-frame effect.

Fig8.6 Subtitle

I added music to ensure the video wasn't monotonous. Additionally, I included subtitles and voiceovers to enrich the overall experience and enhance the storytelling aspect. For the music, I used "A Thousand Miles" and "清明上河图"

Fig8.7 Color Correction and adjusment

To make the visuals more natural and smooth, I added entrance and exit animations. I also adjusted the colors slightly to ensure the overall look is harmonious and pleasing.

Feedback

Week 7:
Mr. Martin suggested incorporating a sense of missed connections, like those moments where someone turns their head, feeling like they saw someone, but in reality, they didn't.

Week 9:
I showed Martin the filmed clips and explained some of the arrangements. He asked me to send him the edited video once it's ready and reminded me to include the color correction.

Reflections

This is a very interesting task. Although I initially wanted to shoot a horror film, the length and the need for multiple characters made it unachievable. Additionally, the short timeline didn't provide enough time for shooting and planning, and transportation was inconvenient. Therefore, I had to continuously change the content. Eventually, I shifted from a horror film to a creative transition video. Since the goal was to showcase creativity, I thought a transition video could combine various techniques and scenes to create a unique result. However, this required many different scenes and numerous clips.

So, in the end, I decided to shoot a two-person video. This was relatively easier to shoot and edit, though I still encountered difficulties, such as the rhythm being overly tight due to the one-minute length. Nevertheless, I was quite satisfied with the final result. It at least met my initial expectations and wasn't too bad.
