Reflections

Experience
This advanced typography module is significantly different from the previous typography module I took. The difficulty level and workload are much higher, and the theory is also more challenging. Integrating this knowledge into our designs presents a considerable challenge.

What makes it even harder is that in the previous typography module, we could constantly ask for feedback from the teacher to understand their evaluation standards and make adjustments to our work. However, in this advanced typography course, we cannot continuously seek feedback, and the teacher also finds it difficult to provide extensive feedback. This requires us to take risks and choose our preferred works, which is also part of the creative process.

From start to finish, this advanced typography course involved using Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and various animation techniques to create our works. The workload was substantial, which helped me become more accustomed to the workflow and prompted me to search online for more methods to refine my projects.

Observation
This advanced typography module is heavy and complex, and I found that my time management skills are quite poor. This module was constantly on tight deadlines, requiring me to rush every week and make constant revisions. Since the teacher could not provide very specific feedback, I had to rely on modifying my rejected works.

For the final task of designing fonts, I chose to use wires. However, controlling wires proved to be extremely difficult. I bought wires of different thicknesses and colors, and while I managed to create the desired works, the wires were still too hard to control. Therefore, I opted to use Adobe Illustrator for better control. Although creating numerous frames was still necessary, it became simpler.

Findings
Over these 14 weeks of advanced typography, I have learned a lot of design theory and various related knowledge. I feel that my skills in Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator have significantly improved. These skills are extremely beneficial, as they can be easily forgotten without practice. The repetitive nature of the tasks has ingrained these operations into my mind and body. It’s hard to believe that I survived these 14 weeks, which were filled with heavy workloads. I hope to gain more knowledge, more skills, and improve my time management abilities.
