MIB for Design Research Dissertation

Task 1: Draft Dissertation

Literature Matrix

In my design research, our lecturer suggested using a Literature Matrix to organize and review the academic articles we have read. It is a simple yet effective tool that can save us a lot of time when writing the literature review. By structuring key information such as the title, author, research methods, main ideas, and relevance to our own research in one place, it becomes much easier to compare and analyze the articles efficiently.

Draft Dissertation

After completing the literature matrix, the next step is to write the literature review by selecting keywords and relevant examples. Following this, I will proceed to draft the dissertation by writing the related sections. Once the draft dissertation is complete, I will wait for feedback from my lecturer to make improvements, including addressing AI and plagiarism checks, in order to finalize the dissertation. Lastly, I will work on the book design to complete the final submission.

Task 2: Final Dissertation

Turnitin Submission

Before submitting the final dissertation, it needs to be submitted to Turnitin to ensure that the plagiarism and AI rates are within acceptable limits. Below is the Turnitin submission proof and result.

Final Dissertation

After making all the necessary revisions and improvements based on the lecturer's feedback, the dissertation will be submitted to Turnitin. Once the final results are confirmed, it will be compiled into the final dissertation for submission.

Task 3: Visual Design Publication

Moodboard
Fig1.1 Moodboard

Before starting the book design, first search online for moodboards to determine the desired design concept and direction. Gather references, including the cover page, content layout, fonts, style, and more.

Reflection

I think the Design Research Dissertation is one of the most challenging modules I have worked on. It requires identifying real-world problems faced by people and thinking critically about potential solutions. This process involves not only observing issues but also analyzing them to uncover meaningful insights that guide the research direction.

A key aspect of the module is collecting relevant information, especially through reading and studying academic literature. This process exposed me to new ideas and perspectives, which inspired my research and expanded my understanding. However, designing effective methods to collect data, such as questionnaires, was also challenging. Crafting meaningful questions to gather useful responses and analyzing the data afterward required significant effort and precision.

Writing the dissertation itself was another major challenge, especially in English. It was necessary to organize ideas coherently while ensuring proper grammar, sentence structure, and academic tone. Moreover, AI rate detection was particularly sensitive. When I used translations for difficult words or phrases, the content often resulted in higher AI scores. To address this, I had to rephrase and rewrite repeatedly, which was time-consuming and mentally exhausting.

Despite the difficulties, this module has been a rewarding experience. It taught me how to approach research systematically, analyze data effectively, and present findings clearly. Although the process required significant time and energy, it has greatly improved my skills as a design researcher.
