MIB for Infographic Design

Fig1.1 Requirement for Project 2

This project involves creating an infographic video animation based on our FLIP group topic research. Running from Week 1 to Week 7,  our team is tasked with developing an infographic report for a specific target audience. The content can focus on creating awareness about environmental issues (such as Global Warming or Recycling), explaining a process (creating a "how-to" video), or defining a concept (like "What is Fast Fashion" or "What is Color Wheel").

Throughout the design process, we need to incorporate three key principles: organization principles (LATCH and content organization), aesthetic principles (animation fundamentals), and cognitive principles (visualization guidelines). The assessment criteria require our group to demonstrate causality, employ multivariate graphics and visuals, properly integrate text and images, manage content quantity, ensure all elements remain within eyesight, utilize various chart types, and avoid de-quantification.

On the technical side, the video must be produced in 1920px x 1080px HD resolution with a duration between 1.5 and 3 minutes. The final submission consists of three components: a 3-minute animated infographic uploaded to YouTube (set as unlisted), a digital compilation uploaded to Google Drive, and reflective studies posted in our E-portfolio (with the E-Portfolio link attached). This project not only tests our animation skills but also our ability to collaborate effectively as a team while organizing and visually presenting information for optimal communication impact.

Fig1.3 Task Distribution for FLIP Presentation

This project involves creating an infographic video animation based on our FLIP group topic research. Running from Week 1 to Week 7, with a current completion of 40%, our team is tasked with developing an infographic report for a specific target audience. The content can focus on creating awareness about environmental issues, explaining a process, or defining a concept.

Our group formation began with 7 members, as we preferred a moderate-sized team for better coordination. Winnie Ho took the leadership role as our group leader. During our initial class discussions, we explored the three possible directions for our project: creating awareness, explaining a process, and defining a concept. After proposing and evaluating several topics under each category, we collectively decided on "Insomnia" as our primary focus.

Task distribution followed based on individual strengths. Winnie, Yanny, and Maiya took responsibility for the artwork and illustrations. Myself, Melvin, and Zihui handled the animation aspects. Karyee was assigned to video editing and voice-over production. This division allowed us to work efficiently while leveraging each member's skills.

For content development, we structured our presentation around key aspects of insomnia: types of insomnia, symptoms, causes, effects, prevention methods, treatment options, and risk factors. Each team member was assigned specific sections for research and content gathering. Our group leader compiled these materials into a comprehensive slide presentation, which we scheduled for Week 3.

Fig1.5 Storyboard, Roles, and Characters

After the initial task allocation, we delved into detailed planning. We researched references, discussed stylistic approaches, and decided on a cute, approachable aesthetic for our animation. We developed a storyline and created a detailed storyboard, specifying descriptions, durations, and narrative elements for each scene. A script was also prepared, though my character (Alex) was eventually removed due to time constraints.

Once the design team completed their illustrations, I began working on my assigned animation segments: scenes 11-20 and later scenes 38-43. I focused particularly on creating smooth, detailed animations, which required extensive use of keyframes and meticulous attention to transitions. This approach, while time-consuming, resulted in more polished visual sequences.

Toward the project's completion, I also made minor corrections to fix a misspelling of "symptoms" in one of the scenes.

On the technical side, the video must be produced in 1920px x 1080px HD resolution with a duration between 1.5 and 3 minutes. The final submission consists of three components: a 3-minute animated infographic uploaded to YouTube (set as unlisted), a digital compilation uploaded to Google Drive, and reflective studies posted in our E-portfolio.

Reflection

This project provided a valuable opportunity for us to collaborate as a team, an aspect that proved to be extremely important for success. With everyone juggling responsibilities from other modules, effective task division became essential. Having seven team members allowed us to distribute the workload efficiently, making the collaborative process quite smooth despite our tight schedule. Time management remained our biggest challenge throughout the project, as we constantly raced against deadlines.

Working on the animation segments was particularly engaging and enjoyable for me. My tendency to focus on fine details meant I dedicated significant time to perfecting my assigned scenes (11-20 and 38-43). This meticulous approach, while time-consuming, resulted in polished animations that contributed to the overall quality of our video.

During the animation process, I explored various techniques and methods to achieve the desired effects. I even ventured into using code to create certain visual elements, such as the screen and object vibrations in scene 13. This technical experimentation was fascinating and added another dimension to my learning experience.

Our final product was something the entire team took pride in. The artwork, animations, and voice-overs all came together harmoniously, creating a cohesive and informative video about insomnia. This success can be largely attributed to our effective collaboration and our leader's guidance.

Winnie's leadership was instrumental to our project's success. She distributed tasks thoughtfully and reasonably, regularly checked on our progress, and offered assistance whenever we encountered difficulties. Beyond coordinating the team, she also took on numerous responsibilities herself, including creating slides and delivering presentations. Her management style fostered a pleasant and productive collaborative environment.

Despite the time constraints and workload pressures, this project provided valuable insights into effective teamwork, specialized skill development, and project management—experiences that will prove beneficial in future professional endeavors.
