Week 6: Task Distribution and Proposed Solutions

Fig1.1 Proposal Solution & Task Split

During Week 6, our team developed detailed plans for our solutions to preserve and showcase traditional Malaysian cultures. After thorough discussions, we proposed three complementary solutions: an immersive website, tangible products, and AR souvenirs. These approaches aim to bring Baba Nyonya culture and Wayang Kulit (shadow puppetry) to the public in innovative and engaging ways.

Three Major Solutions

1. Immersive Website (Primary Solution)
The immersive website serves as the core of our project, divided into two main sections for Baba Nyonya culture and Wayang Kulit:

User Journey:

  • Users first choose which culture they wish to explore (Baba Nyonya or Wayang Kulit)
  • Upon entry, users are presented with a carefully crafted introduction
  • This is followed by a virtual scene: a traditional room setting for Baba Nyonya culture, and a backstage environment for Wayang Kulit

Interaction Design:

  • Using a scroll-down design, different cultural elements appear as users scroll through the page
  • The Baba Nyonya section showcases beadwork art (Kasut Manik), traditional lanterns, and traditional attire (Kebaya)
  • The Wayang Kulit section features traditional musical instruments, shadow puppets, and animations demonstrating traditional stories
  • The Wayang Kulit theme is "Hikayat Maharaja Wana: When Light Meets Shadow"

2. Tangible Products and Interactive Experiences
Shadow Puppet Experience:
  • Design a physical puppet experience for Wayang Kulit
  • Implement hand detection technology to allow visitors to experience controlling puppets like a Tok Dalang (puppet master)

3. AR Souvenirs
Augmented Reality Experience:
  • Design physical merchandise specifically for Baba Nyonya culture
  • Visitors can scan physical items with their phones to trigger AR animations
  • In the Wayang Kulit section, we also plan to integrate AR technology for scanning to view shadow puppet performances

Through these three complementary solutions, we aim to create a comprehensive, multi-sensory cultural experience for users that preserves the essence of traditional cultures while making them more accessible and engaging through modern technology.

Fig1.2 My Task

Progress Report on Assigned Tasks
After our team task distribution, I actively completed my responsibilities, including collecting references for Wayang Kulit, researching AR souvenir designs, creating storyboards, and designing website wireframes. Here's a detailed progress report of my work:

Reference Collection
Wayang Kulit References
I completed gathering reference materials related to Wayang Kulit (shadow puppetry), which will help us accurately represent the characteristics and essence of this traditional art form.

AR Souvenirs Design References
I also collected design reference materials for AR souvenirs, providing creative and technical inspiration for developing our augmented reality experience souvenirs.

Storyboard Creation and Modification
Based on earlier discussions and collected references, I expanded and modified our original storyboard. Specifically for the "Hikayat Maharaja Wana" theme, I enriched the storyline and details.

Subsequently, I transformed these stories into formal storyboard formats using the team's previously created sketches, laying the foundation for future animation production. This process not only clarified the narrative structure but also defined key scenes and visual elements.

Color Scheme Design
For the color scheme, I proposed three alternative options. After team discussion, we determined that the first and second color schemes were most suitable. Based on this feedback, we made some adjustments to the Wayang Kulit section's color scheme, particularly modifying the accent color to better reflect the visual characteristics and atmosphere of shadow puppetry.

Fig1.4 Wireframe change

Website Wireframe Design
Regarding the website wireframe, I first organized reference materials, seeking creative and practical immersive website design examples. Based on these successful cases, I redesigned our project's wireframe to better align with our creative vision and user experience goals.

These design adjustments considered user interaction flow, content presentation logic, and technical feasibility, aiming to create an immersive website that both faithfully presents traditional culture and provides a modern interactive experience.

Storyboard

Storyboard and Animation Progress

After completing the reference collection and story revision, I immediately began working on the Storyboard creation. As the core content of the Wayang Kulit section, the "Hikayat Maharaja Wana: When Light Meets Shadow" animation project became my main focus.

My Storyboard creation adopted a professional format, providing for each key scene: scene numbers and timecode notations, detailed visual descriptions, shot type specifications, estimated duration for each segment, scene transition methods, and action and emotion descriptions. This structured Storyboard not only helps team members understand how the story will be visually presented but also provides clear guidance for subsequent animation production.

During the creation process, I made several key adjustments to the "Hikayat Maharaja Wana" story: strengthened the symbolic meaning of light and shadow, echoing the "When Light Meets Shadow" theme; added more detailed elements from traditional Wayang Kulit performances; adjusted the narrative rhythm to ensure the story could be fully presented within the limited animation duration; added visual elements that highlight Malaysian traditional cultural characteristics.

When designing the Storyboard, I paid special attention to the following technical aspects: ensuring coherence in scene transitions; considering the technical feasibility of animation production; balancing visual complexity with production time; leaving appropriate space for sound and music elements.

Through this stage of work, the creative framework for the "Hikayat Maharaja Wana: When Light Meets Shadow" animation project has been essentially established. This Storyboard will serve as the blueprint for our team's subsequent animation production, ensuring that we can vividly and accurately present the essence of Wayang Kulit as a traditional art form.

Week 7: Final Revisions and Presentation

Fig1.6 Presentation

Based on the feedback received in Week 6, we conducted comprehensive revisions and presentation preparations during Week 7. First, following Dr. Wong's suggestions, we readjusted the Information Architecture, simplifying the structure and ensuring clearer user pathways. We also optimized the UI kit, paying special attention to accessibility and contrast issues.

For wireframes, team members checked and refined their respective areas of responsibility, ensuring all elements aligned with the new design standards and Information Architecture requirements. I also conducted final checks and fine-tuning of the animation storyboard section that I was responsible for.

With only 12 minutes allocated for the presentation, we had to streamline our content. The team distributed tasks, with each member responsible for introducing specific sections, and practiced repeatedly to ensure we could present the most important information within the limited time. We trimmed some secondary slide content to keep the presentation concise and focused on the core values and innovative aspects of our project.

This week's work ensured our project reached its optimal state before the final presentation, fully demonstrating our efforts and creativity in preserving and promoting traditional Malaysian cultures.

Additionally, to further highlight our project theme during the final presentation, we deliberately chose attire that matched our subject matter. Team members wore traditional Baba Nyonya costumes, while I chose to wear traditional Malay Batik clothing. This not only made our presentation more vivid and interesting but also demonstrated our respect and commitment to the cultures we were researching, adding a unique cultural atmosphere to the entire presentation.

Week 6

After receiving Dr. Wong's feedback, we made project adjustments. He approved our overall direction but noted our Information Architecture contained many unnecessary elements. Dr. Wong explained how to build more efficient information structures, emphasizing the importance of streamlined content and clear user pathways.

For our wireframe UI kit, he taught us how to use Figma's tools to check accessibility, particularly ensuring good contrast. These suggestions helped us create more user-friendly and clearly structured designs.

Reflections

Despite Major Project 1 lasting only 7 weeks, we had to complete numerous demanding tasks, including conducting field research in Melaka, while simultaneously managing coursework from other modules. During this intense but fulfilling process, I sincerely appreciate the outstanding leadership of our group leader, Winnie.

Winnie demonstrated exceptional organizational skills, reasonably distributing tasks among team members, and consistently monitoring everyone's work progress and personal needs. She always provided timely assistance and guidance when we encountered difficulties, offering encouragement and support during demanding periods. Her leadership style was both professional and compassionate, allowing each member to excel in a comfortable team atmosphere. Particularly noteworthy was her ability to listen to everyone's ideas and organically integrate different creative concepts into the project, ensuring our final product reflected both the power of teamwork and preserved each individual's creative characteristics.

It was under Winnie's excellent leadership that we were able to complete a satisfying project within the limited timeframe, establishing a solid foundation for our future Major Project 2.

Worth mentioning is that our project outcomes actually exceeded our current learning progress, involving many technologies and knowledge that we will only formally encounter in the upcoming semester. This presents both a challenge and motivation—we look forward to mastering more professional skills and knowledge in our future studies to truly transform our creative concepts into high-quality products in Major Project 2.

Although our project design requires technically sophisticated elements like AR and interactive website development that we haven't fully mastered yet, this has precisely stimulated our enthusiasm for learning. I believe that through upcoming courses and self-directed exploration, we will certainly acquire the necessary technical skills and knowledge to ultimately present an excellent work that combines cultural depth with technological innovation.
